He was shot at and critically wounded while he was travelling in a Gypsy jeep for a rally near Barkas through his Chandranarayangutta constituency in the old city. Ahmed Balala, the MIM legislator from Malakpet, accompanying him was also injured in the mayhem. Apart from opening four rounds of fire the assailants attacked them with swords and daggers, some of the group of about 15 assailants reportedly came and fled on horseback. Both Balal and Owaisi have been admitted to the Owaisi Hospital in Santosh Nagar. In the retaliatory fire, when the gunman of the legislators opened fire four of the assailants were killed. The assailants are understood to be the henchmen of a local tough Mohammed Pehlwan who is aligned with the rival Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) party.
An ongoing property dispute is believed to be the trigger for the attack. Andhra Pradesh chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy accompanied by the state home minister P. Sabita Reddy visited the Owaisi Hospital to enquire personally about the latest condition of Akbaruddin Owaisi.
The police have imposed prohibitory orders to prevent the assembly of groups of persons in the old city but belligerent MIM supporters have gathered at the hospital. Shops in the vicinity were forced to down shutters and streets deserted. But some MIM supporters ransacked shops and restaurants in the Barkas area believed to that of supporters of Mohammed Pehlwan. More police reinforcements are being rushed to the old city. Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababu Naidu has described the incident as a failure of the government in ensuring security in the state capital. The development is a serious setback for the AIMIM founded by the late Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi. Akbaruddin is his second son of the party founder. The eldest, Assaduddin Owaisi is the president of the party and represents Hyderabad in the Lok Sabha.
